We are verifying video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia say killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he succumbed to his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the location of where the pictures originated was based on posts saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video.
Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
