Larian Studios Details Its Application of Machine Learning for Upcoming Project
The studio behind acclaimed RPGs like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin just teased its upcoming project, creating immense excitement within the industry. However, recent comments from the company's co-founder have added clarity to the discussion, touching on the team's approach toward machine learning.
A Tool for Ideation, Not Replacement
In a new statement, the studio's founder detailed that the team is using AI technology for particular preliminary functions. These encompass enhancing PowerPoint slides, generating early-stage concept art, and drafting placeholder dialogue.
Notably, Vincke emphasized that the shipping assets in the game will be created exclusively by actual writers. "Larian is writing all the content manually," he said.
Larian is continuously increasing our team of storytellers and are actively assembling narrative groups.
As visual development is being particularly referenced — we right now have 23 concept artists and have roles to fill for more talent.
Everything we do is additive and focused on having people spend more time on actual creation.
Every machine learning application applied correctly is a boost to a creative team process, not a substitute for their skill.
Tempering Reactions with Clear Intent
The news of using AI originally sparked backlash among a segment of the fanbase. In response, Vincke issued additional clarification on social media.
"Our team utilizes AI tools to gather inspiration, similar to we use search engines and reference books," he stated. "During the conceptual brainstorming phase we use it as a basic framework for layout which we then replace with original illustrations."
He added, "We've hired artists for their unique talent, not for their ability to execute what a algorithm proposes."
Three Pillars of Practical Application
Vincke had in the past broken down the team's practical method to machine learning, defining its use into three main areas:
- Streamlining Repetitive Work: Areas like motion capture cleaning, audio processing, and pipeline-specific tasks like adapting animations for different models.
- Rapid Prototyping ('White Boxing'): Using technology to rapidly prototype simple versions of gameplay ideas to validate concepts ahead of expensive implementation.
- Future Potential for Gameplay: Investigating how AI could eventually facilitate innovative reactivity, particularly in simulating unforeseen permutations in a detailed game universe.
He explicitly stated that core creative areas — including writing — are are in no way areas where the studio is replacing human input. Conversely, Larian is actively hiring in these precise positions.
"Our studio is neither shipping a game with any AI components, and we are certainly not considering reducing creatives to replace them with artificial intelligence," Vincke summarized.
