Patrick Bamford Signs With Sheffield United Despite Leading Abusive Chants Targeting Manager Chris Wilder

The striker has signed with Sheffield United only half a year after starting derogatory chants targeting the team's coach, Chris Wilder.

The 32-year-old forward, a free agent since leaving Leeds, has signed a agreement with the second-tier club in difficulty until January. His seven-year spell with Leeds was ended by mutual consent this past summer.

One of the player's last memorable actions as a Leeds player involved leading abusive chants regarding Wilder amid the club’s success festivities this spring. Now, the former England international will be playing for Wilder as Sheffield United's boss seeks to pull his beloved club away from the relegation zone.

Past Conflict Between the Striker & Wilder

Both men had a past before Leeds won promotion to the Premier League last season while Sheffield United were defeated in the promotion decider to Sunderland. Wilder called the forward as a "muppet" back when the roles were reversed during the 2018-19 season and the Blades won direct promotion while Leeds fell short in the playoffs.

Reconciliation and Looking Ahead

Everything seems to have been resolved with United, the league's lowest scorers, urgently requiring of a boost in attack and Bamford hoping to resurrect his playing days.

The Wilder chant spread widely in April. A repentant Bamford and the Leeds manager, Daniel Farke, called Wilder the following day.

Wilder said at the time: “Spoke with Pat recently and I have no problem whatsoever with it. I'm uncertain regarding the language from a fellow professional! But I valued and respected him calling me.

“We spent a short while and similarly I spoke to Daniel Farke too and we had a longer discussion with him and he's a great person, a class act. When I was playing we would dish it out and take it and that’s part and parcel of the game across all levels, even on a Sunday morning. I've got absolutely no issue. I'm fine with it and I told him that to Patrick.”

Recent Career Struggles

Bamford made 18 appearances for Leeds last season but the former Nottingham Forest, Chelsea and Middlesbrough striker has faced difficulties with injury in recent years.
