The Details Known About the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

At least 16 lives lost their lives and more than 40 were wounded when assailants fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police have labeled a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the death toll is 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were admitted to medical facilities.

The deceased have not yet been formally identified, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the events before the shooting, saying they were standing when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain under care, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
