The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Alleges Parent Company Blocked Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Product
The original creators of the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has claimed that parent company the multinational conglomerate blocked the launch for a new pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that co-founded the business with Jerry Greenfield, announced how he plans to independently develop this new flavor within an individual series highlighting issues the company was prevented from speaking out about.
Ongoing Conflict Involving Founders versus Parent Company
This latest development intensifies the continuing tension among the world-famous ice cream maker and Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods giant which acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.
The co-founders maintain how Unilever along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "maintaining its activist principles".
The Fruit Flavor becoming a Symbol of Support
Mr. Cohen stated via social media that he's developing a new watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting public suggestions for naming options plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen declared from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that advocates for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”
This particular fruit has become a symbol of support for Palestinians because of its coloration, which closely resemble the colors in the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Historical Activism and Current Changes
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in territories under Israeli control, leading to Unilever transferring their Israel business to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming dessert series will be created through Ben's Best, the activist ice cream brand which was first created several years back to support former political contender Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Shifts and Future Intentions
The founder revealed how he will create additional frozen dessert varieties that address issues that Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.
The announcement follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned from the company recently, following many years with the organization, mentioning worries regarding how its independence had been undermined following Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.
Previously, Ben Cohen stated that “My partner has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."
“My conscience leads me to keep working within the organization to advocate for its independence ensuring that the company can achieve the social mission, the values which established its foundation while upholding for decades," he explained to journalists.
