The people of Israel commemorate second remembrance of October 7th incident as Gaza peace negotiations advance
Citizens have assembled across the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-conducted attack on 7 October 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The attack resulted in more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely deadliest day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel reacted by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our aggressive adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on that day.
He also vowed to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will never again pose a threat to Israel".
Memorial Gatherings Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled formal remembrance events until mid-October - after the end of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still were held across the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the families of Israelis killed in the Hamas incident was held in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast throughout Israeli broadcast stations.
Hours earlier, a moment of silence was respected across the country.
Negotiation Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' representatives met in the North African Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of indirect talks to discuss the terms of the agreement.
A high-ranking Palestinian official knowledgeable about the discussions said that an evening round of mediated discussions began at 7 PM local time.
The official said the morning session finished without tangible results, amid conflicting views over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not restart fighting after the initial stage of the deal.
He added that the talks are "tough and have yet to deliver any major advancement," but mentioned that mediators are striving to narrow the disparities between the two sides.
Essential Points in Discussions
- A permanent truce
- The exchange of the prisoners still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for relief supplies deliveries
- Future management of the territory
Public Sentiment
In the city's Hostages Square that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member lived through the attack on the outdoor event, where 378 people were lost their lives and many more were captured by Hamas fighters - told: "Nowhere seems like home any longer and until each abducted person are released none of us will have peace of mind."
"When we see everyone home returned, we can breathe again. Then we can start to heal," she concluded.
Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in Jerusalem, people gathered to demonstrate their backing for the families of the captives. Israel says nearly fifty remain in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be alive.
Protester a participant stated: "We need do any agreement needed for the hostages to return. But we really want promises that we will be secure."
Research now consistently show that about seventy percent of Israelis want the conflict to conclude in as payment for the release of the hostages.
Palestinian Situation
At the location of Nova festival, grieving people gathered to honor the dead.
From that location, the sound of military attacks and explosions could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people indicated the severe Israeli attacks continued.
In the main city, bombardments were documented in the early hours of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, Rimal and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the east side neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwest.
"When the evening falls, the dread arrives with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose young son was killed by an Israeli air strike previously, described.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the air strikes. All the night we are resting together, clinging, notably my little child who places his face on me the entire evening."
"Constantly we check the news to see what happened. And I'm worried that this halt will not be finalized and that the conflict will resume to us."
Humanitarian Situation
Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area announced it had received the remains of half dozen people by the afternoon, including a trio killed in an Israeli attack in the south part area.
A different healthcare center in the south region of the city reported additional fatalities had been delivered. A person was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while seeking assistance to the south region, medical staff said.
