The Reze Arc Movie Leads Domestic Cinema Earnings in Debut Weekend
Has Sony achieved another hit? In the wake of the box office performance of the blockbuster Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which grossed in excess of $600 million worldwide, the new movie Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has surpassed the $100M mark globally, hitting a worldwide gross of over $108 million this weekend. The film surpassed the horror sequel Black Phone 2 (almost $13 million) in its sophomore frame in cinemas, as well as Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere featuring the talented Jeremy Allen White ($9M).
Notable American and Global Performance
The work of filmmaker Tatsuya Yoshihara, the film is a direct continuation of the debut season of the Chainsaw Man series. It brought in $18.2M domestically after a powerful $5.2M Saturday earnings and $4.5 million Sunday performance. Globally, the MAPPA-produced movie grossed $14.7M across 46 Sony markets, pushing its worldwide total to $60.4M via Sony ($43.1M abroad, $18.2M domestic). Sony has yet to announce its complete box office tally.
Benchmarks to Other Blockbuster Anime Movies
Specialist agency White Box Entertainment had earlier commented, comparing the film’s projected performance to the anime hit Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which made thirty-four million dollars in the North America in 2022 and started with a similar eighteen million dollars domestically. Reze Arc’s first weekend matches that benchmark, while its $108 million worldwide total is now positioned just behind that movie's over $166 million total earnings. Although it’s unlikely this Chainsaw Man film will earn the numbers of smash success the enormous hit Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, it remains a major victory for the studio.
Marketing Campaigns Drive Box Office Dominance
The studio and its partner Crunchyroll have skillfully used audience interaction to boost their dominance at the animated movie market. The movie's marketing campaign began at the Anime Expo in LA in July with a discussion featuring MAPPA, unique experiences, and Pochita photo ops, then continued with a notable appearance at NYCC including behind-the-scenes footage, audience giveaways, and further MAPPA discussions. Moreover, organizers held an private showing for enthusiasts for the public and influencers alike after the concluding day of the event.
Future Prospects
This year marks a major time for Japanese animation, and for the studio, which has one more feature-length anime premiering this year in Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in late this year.
