What's Inside the Briefcase Henry Opens in Stranger Things?
For much of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive inside a mental fortress constructed from the past of Vecna. The search for freedom in episode 6 leads them to experience a traumatic incident from Henry's childhood—a discovery that may just hold the secret to his downfall permanently.

The Discovery in the Tunnel
Upon meeting Max in the psychic realm dubbed Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. An accidental discovery a telescope taken from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the true terror lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max plummet into a abandoned tunnel.
They watch a Henry as a boy encounter an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man panics and shoots, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the trauma involved more than a simple act of survival.

A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission
This backstory explains the 1943 event, which reportedly teleported a warship into a plane later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.
This man's son, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this experiment in Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker pilfered lab samples to sell to the Soviets, who were eager to begin their parallel research. The man in the mine shaft was that very thief.
Unlocking the Mystery
Based on what is revealed about his research, the container would assuredly have vials of the altered blood. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. It's probable he was infected upon handling the contents, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects in Hawkins Lab.
Alternatively, the case could have held exotic matter that later made its way to the Hawkins lab, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. The prequel shows that Henry was transported in the Abyss, coming back after half a day with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he battles the whispers of a dark entity, much like how Will was possessed by the shadow monster in season 2.
A Weaponized Emotion
His lasting fear linked to that memory demonstrates how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. While he controls the army of monsters and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him lingers. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a showdown between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to fortify himself.
His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now is aware of what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a critical advantage in the ultimate battle ahead.
